CARLSBAD, Calif. (May 5, 2012) -- The 37th playing of the Curtis Cup Matches are about a month away. The biennial matches that pit the top eight female amateur golfers from the U.S. against those from Great Britain and Ireland start on June 8 in Nairn Scotland at the Nairn Golf Club.

The matches are contested over three days. On the first and second day three foursome matches and three four-ball matches are played. On day three there are eight singles matches. Each match is worth one point, a tied match earns each team a half point. The team that wins 10 1/2 points or more wins the Cup. In the event of a tie the team defending the title will retain the cup.

The first Curtis Cup Match was played in 1932 at Wentworth Golf Club, in England. Marion Hollins captained the American team, which consisted of Mrs. Vare, Maureen Orcutt, Virginia Van Wie, Opal Hill, Helen Hicks, Leona Pressler Cheney, and Dorothy Higbie. The team representing Great Britain and Ireland was made up of Joyce Wethered, the famous English champion who also served as captain, Wanda Morgan, Enid Wilson, Molly Gourlay, Doris Park, Diana Fishwick, Elsie Corlett, and Mrs. J.B. Watson. The Americans prevailed, 51 1/2 to 31 1/2.

In the most recent matches in 2010 at the Essex Country Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., the USA defeated Great Britain and Ireland, 12½-7½. Jennifer Johnson made a 2-foot putt at the 14th hole that clinched the matches for the U.S. marking the teams seventh straight victory.

ABOUT THE Curtis Cup

Officially named "The Women's International Cup," the first Curtis Cup wasn't officially held until 1932. The biennial competition features the best female players from the United States of America pitted against a similar squad from Great Britain and Ireland. While it was hoped that many nations would eventually join the Match, the Curtis Cup has remained a two-sided competition.
