Two Man Links underway at Bandon Dunes
BANDON, Oregon (April 29, 2012) -- From the moment we set eyes on Bandon Dunes, the staff at amateurgolf.com knew that we not only had to come back, we had to do so with as many like-minded competitors as possible. That was over 11 years ago.

On Sunday, another solid group of players from around the U.S. and Canada teed off in the Two Man Links Championship. It was the team of Chad Clark, M.D. and David DeBerry from Southern California who made the most noise early. Playing in the Net Division, the team opened with a 10-under 61.

"We made three absolute bombs, in the 30-50 foot range," said DeBerry after the round.

One of those came at the Pacific Dunes 8th hole, an into-the-wind par-4 where the team's shouts of joy could be heard on the surrounding holes like Augusta's Amen Corner -- no gallery required.

DeBerry and Clark are trailed by Ed Ruiz and Chris Ladd from Northern California, and the Colorado father-son duo (and frequent tournament entrants) of Jim and TJ Tarbell.

A team of first year players, David Ujihara and Gary Wing, are tied at the top of the Senior Division with two-time champions Sherman Haggerty and Ben Whipple at 3-under 68 gross.

Pete Davison and Pete Wlodkowski (72) hold a 1-stroke lead over the father-son team of Scott and Josh Hanosh, who posted 73 in the afternoon's windiest conditions.

There will, no doubt, be a number of stories of special shots and achievements during the week. Today, we will share just two with you.

Long Driver:

Gary Beene, playing with his uncle Howard Gregerson, drove the 6th green and two putted for birdie. More incredibly, Beene launched another big one over the yawning bunker on the par-5 18th and hit - get this - a 9 iron onto the green for his second shot.

Comeback of the Day:

Charles and Mason Mazzola, yet another father-son duo, showed that you're indeed never out of it. Starting off with a best-ball 40 on the front nine, they birdied the last six holes to post 30 on the back nine. "I shot 50-37", quipped the 12-handicap Mason Mazzola, who drove the par-4 16th green with a 3-wood and two putted.
