FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (April 2, 2012) -- Hunter Mahan trusted a Pro V1x golf ball to his second PGA Tour victory of the season Sunday at the Shell Houston Open in a showcase of consistency and precision.
Mahan, also a winner of the WGC-Accenture Match Play in March, put on a ballstriking clinic at Redstone Golf Club that resulted in 18 birdies and just two bogeys over the 72 holes.
He led the field in Greens in Regulation at 86.1 percent, capping off the week with a tougher-than-it-looked two-putt par on the difficult par-4 18th.
Mahan closed with a 1-under 71 for a 16-under 272 total and one-shot victory, one of four wins on the week for Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x players around the world, including Pro V1 loyalist Sun Young Yoo's first major victory at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
Titleist golf ball players have now combined for 38 wins across the worldwide professional tours in 2012, more than six times the nearest competitor with six and more than all competitors combined.
A total of 4,294 players have teed up Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls in those same events, more than six times the nearest competitor with 642 and more than all other golf balls combined.
In Houston, Mahan had no problems, especially when it came to controlling his Pro V1x.
Take, for example, Mahan's tee shot Sunday at the 238-yard, par-3 9th hole.
"Just the perfect shot. I hit it up in the air, downwind, and just hit it high enough to where it kind of carries a little bit, and it was awesome," he said.
Mahan's Pro V1x landed on the front of the green, took a few hopes and rolled to 5 feet from the pin. He made it for birdie.
"Probably the shot of the day, got me kind of rolling long.…," he said. "It's great when the ball does exactly what it's going to do."
The win was Mahan's fourth of his PGA Tour career and moved him to No. 4 in the Official World Golf Ranking as he heads to Augusta National for the first major of 2012.
Mahan was one of six Titleist golf ball players in the top 11 on the final leader board.
In total, 96 players in the field teed up Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls, six times the nearest competitor with 16 and more than all competitors combined. Titleist was also first in sand, lob and approach wedges (11); and putters (57).
Louis Oosthuizen (Pro V1x) tied for third at 14-under 274, while Jeff Overton (Pro V1x) and Titleist Brand Ambassador Brian Davis (Pro V1x) tied for fourth, another two shots back.
Titleist Brand Ambassadors Bud Cauley (Pro V1x) and Cameron Tringale (Pro V1x) also finished in the top 10, joining two players in a tie for eighth at 11-under 277.
• LPGA: Pro V1 loyalist Sun Young Yoo captured the first major of the 2012 season while leading a 1-2-3 finish for Titleist golf ball players at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
Yoo, who tied I.K. Kim (Pro V1) in regulation at 9-under 279, rolled her Pro V1 in from 12 feet for birdie on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to secure the second LPGA victory of her career and her first major.
"I don't know how to say it," said Yoo, who closed with a 3-under 69 at Mission Hills Country Club. "I don't think any words can describe how I feel right now."
World No. 1 Yani Tseng (Pro V1x) almost joined the playoff, narrowly missing an attempt for birdie on the final hole. She finished in solo third (8-under 280), while four players tied for fourth at 7-under 281, including defending champion Stacy Lewis (Pro V1x), Hee Kyung Seo (Pro V1x) and Amy Yang (Pro V1x).
Eight out of the 10 players who finished in the top-10 at the Kraft Nabisco Championship trusted a Titleist golf ball for their success.
Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the Kraft Nabisco Championship with 85 players, more than eight times the nearest competitor with 10 and more than all other golf balls combined.
• ASIAN TOUR: It was a 1-2-3 Pro V1x finish at the Panasonic Open India, where Digvijay Singh (Pro V1x) closed with a 6-under-par 66 to win his first Asian Tour title.
Singh rolled his Pro V1x in from 12 feet for birdie on the final hole to post an 11-under 277 total, two shots clear of Gaganjeet Bhullar (Pro V1x), and M. Siddikur (Pro V1x).
Eleven of the 14 players who finished among the top 10 were Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x players.
A total of 120 players field relied on Titleist golf balls for their success, 100 more than the nearest competitor and more than all other golf balls combined. Titleist was also No. 1 in iron sets (41) and sand, lob and approach wedges (160).
• AUSTRALASIAN: Mike Hendry (Pro V1x) fired four consecutive rounds in the 60's to capture the New Zealand PGA Championship.
Hendry finished at 16-under (69-68-67-68) 272 for a two-shot victory over two players, including Andrew Martin (Pro V1x). He started Sunday's round by rolling his Pro V1x for five consecutive birdies.
Eight of the 11 players who finished among the top 10 and ties relied upon Titleist golf balls for their success.
• EUROPEAN TOUR: Pro V1x loyalist Chris Wood (Pro V1x) fired a final round 8-under par 64 to equal the Verdura Golf Resort & Spa course record, but his 14-under 274 total was one shot shy of the Sicilian Open title. The 24-year old Wood now has six top-three finishes on the European Tour.
Wood was one of 95 players in the field that teed up a Titleist golf ball, more than five times the nearest competitor with 17 and more than all competitors combined.
