SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (Mar. 4, 2012) -- The first round of matches in the women's championship flight began today at Harding Park under near perfect conditions.
The defending champion, Hannah Suh of San Jose easily advanced with a 4 & 3 victory over Monica Chen of Fremont who withstood a four hole playoff yesterday to make the top flight.
Suh, who recently signed to play for the Cal Bears, will meet Monique Riley of Pleasanton in the quarterfinals. Riley downed 2003 champion Eva Monisteri of San Mateo 2 & 1.
It took 19 holes but St. Ignatius High School senior Alexandra Wong overtook the 2011 California Girls' champion, Carly Childs. Childs is another player recently committed to Cal and will be teammates with Hannah Suh and her older sister Emily Childs. Wong has recently committed to play golf at Princeton. Her next match will be against Erika Salinas of Sacramento.
Salinas, the 12th seed advanced with a 2 & 1 victory over Kathleen Scavo of Benicia.
In the lower bracket no. 2 seed and medalist in qualifying Anna Zhou of Palo Alto was upset by four-time California Women's Amateur champion, Lynne Cowan of Davis. Zhou, 14 and a freshman at Gunn High, held a 1-up lead through most of the front nine and was 2-up after 10. Cowan squared the match up after a birdie at 12 and a miscue by Zhou at the 14th after a difficult shot from the right rough that resulted in bogey.
After an aggressive play to the uphill 15th that over shot the green, Cowan was unable to get up and down and gave one back, but then rallied with a 5-foot birdie on 16 to square the match. They halved the par 3 number 17 with two-putt pars and were all square going into 18. Zhou missed the green wide right on the tricky short par 5 and after a poor chip was left with 25 feet uphill. Cowan managed to reach to top tier hole-high in the fringe in two. Zhou two-putted for par and Cowan two-putted for birdie and the win.
Cowan will meet up in the quarterfinals with 15 year old Jayshree Sarathy of Palo Alto. Sarathy downed Aman Sangha of San Mateo 3 & 1 with a birdie from the fringe on hole 17.
Hannah Sodersten of Fresno, no. 3 seed beat Layney Silva of Stockton 2-up. Sodersten will meet up with Chloe Corriveau of Monterey. Corriveau downed Madison Hirsch of Fremont 3 & 2.
The quarterfinal matches begin next Saturday at 7:00 a.m. followed by the semifinals in the afternoon. The 36-hole final concludes the tournament on Sunday.
