We as golfers have always wanted to try and play that one golf course whether across town or across state. There is one small problem - it was private and you did not know a member. However, a company called www.Boxgroove.com can now help. Boxgroove.com is an inventive online golf community made up of all golfers regardless of club affiliation and private golf courses.

The premise is very simple. Log in, select a state and pick a club. If you see a tee time at the club you are eligible to book it. If you see a club and it has a request button then that club would like you to make a request to play during the days of the week and time periods it has designated. If there are no tee times and no request button then this club may not be taking any outside play from you at this time. We like to think of Boxgroove as the “the Linkedin” for Golfers. That is, golfers also have the ability to be hosted by other private country club members as well. So even though a private club may not be enrolled with Boxgroove yet, you can still possibly play golf there. Every country club golfer has the ability to post tee times to the community (to take 1 – 3 golfers) to their home course or to accept requests from other golfers. Don’t worry there are plenty of filters so everyone can keep their information secure. So the community grows very fast as more and more golfers join.

Certainly, the challenges with the growth of the game and the economy have now impacted private clubs and made this concept become more acceptable. However, this was needed for the betterment of the game. Many private clubs have some wonderful golf courses that are like works of art and could withstand a few more patrons to experience their beauty. To quote David Fay, past president of the USGA: “Private golf clubs in the British Isles treat their courses as living works of art to be shared, much like the Louvre or the Met are open to those wishing to study and enjoy the masterpieces.”

We agree with this sentiment. Most of us at Boxgroove were either members of private clubs in the past or still are and we welcome golfers to visit our club. We think this is a win-win for golf. The golfer will find some new experiences playing some golf courses they never could play and the private clubs will make some much needed revenue on a tee time that would go unused and perhaps they may even convert a golfer to a member. Now you may not find a 9:30 am Saturday morning time, but there are plenty of other non busy times at these clubs where they would welcome a few more golfers.

We are just finishing our second year and are proud to welcome the amateurgolf.com golfer to Boxgroove. You may not find all the private courses yet on Boxgroove but we hope you join. The strength in numbers of our golfer community will get more private clubs to join in the future.
