CARMEL, Calif. (Nov. 5, 2011) – The quarterfinal and semifinal matches finished up today at the 45th California Women’s Amateur Championship. The medalist, Kimberley Lorenzana met her match in Regina De Guzman, the 8th seed. Guzman, 19 of Manilla who will play on the golf team for San Jose State next season had a solid round with two birdies and beat the medalist 2 & 1.

Petra Cole of Santee, 25, a recent graduate of San Diego State who is now attending graduate school while caddying at Torrey Pines, took down four-time champion Lynne Cowan of Davis with a 3 & 1 victory. Solid iron play and putting were factors in her victory.

De Guzman and Cole met in the semifinals and Cole’s great putting continued. She had birdies at 1, 7 and 8 and found herself 3-up at the turn. She got to 5-up with birdies at 10 and 11 but lost one to a De Guzman birdie at 12. They each parred the next three holes and Cole took the 4 & 3 win.

In the bottom bracket Jenni Jenq, 25 of Saratoga who caddies part time and works at the Humane Society, dispatched of Wanasa Zhou of Beaumont 3 & 1. Renata Young, also 25, a physician’s assistant, beat 11 year old Elizabeth Wang, of San Marino 3 & 2.

Jenq and Young met in the afternoon semifinals. The seesaw match that included two birdies for each player on the front nine was all square after ten holes. A birdie for Jenq at 11 and bogey for Young at 14 put Jenq two-up after 14. But Jenq gave one back at 15 with an approach that overshot the green and ended up in the back fringe. She failed to get up and down and lost to Young’s par.

Young failed to keep the momentum going hitting her second shot in the front bunker at the 389 yar par 4 number 16. Her poor bunker shot overshot the green resulting in an unplayable lie. She lost to Jenq’s par and was now 2-down. Jenq hit a solid iron over the water to the par three number 17 to about 10 feet. Young’s tee shot missed the green wide left and found the water resulting in a 3 & 1 win for Jenq.

It will be quite a battle of the 25 year olds for the finals. The match-up of the long hitting Jenq against Cole, the birdie machine will be something to watch.

In the Helen Lengfield flight Melanie McCaffery of Huntington Beach defeated Julie Piyavid-Lohman also of Huntington Beach 5 & 3 and will meet Hannah Purdy of Newbury Park in the finals tomorrow. Purdy beat Amanda Nealy of Baton Rouge, LA 2 & 1.

The 36-hole championship final match starts Sunday at 8:00 a.m. followed by the 18 hole final match of the Helen Lengfield flight.
