Calif. Women's Amateur: Lynne Cowan leads after day one

CARMEL, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2011) – The 45th playing of the California Women’s Amateur Championship began today at the Golf Club at Quail Lodge. The field of 54 players competed in the first of two rounds of qualifying under near perfect conditions.

First round leader, Lynne Cowan of Davis fired a one-under par 70 and was the only player in the red. The four-time champion had three birdies and two bogeys. The highlight of her round came at the down hill 188 yard par 3, number 5. Her shot landed on the edge of the cup bounced off the liner and ended up several yards off the green some 25 feet away. Denied her second hole in one, she managed an up and down par.

Kimberly Lorenzana of Long Beach, a reinstated amateur as of yesterday, shot and even par 71 on the 6021 yard track and is alone in second. Tied for third with a 73 is Mitsue Lewis of San Diego and Renata Young of Antioch. 2007 champion, Marianne Towersey, of Pebble Beach sits in fifth at 75. 2010 runner-up Lauren Dobashi, assistant coach for the U.C Davis women’s golf team is tied for sixth at 77 along with two-time Calif Women’s Senior champion, Sandy Woodruff of Santa Cruz, Jenni JenQ of Saratoga and Wanasa Zhou of Beaumont.

The second round of qualifying starts Thursday at 8 a.m. The low 32 qualifiers will comprise the championship flight. The following 16 players will make up the Helen Lengfield flight which is named after the tournament’s founder. Match play starts Friday and continues until the 36 hole final on Sunday.

ABOUT THE California Women's Amateur

The California Women’s Amateur Championship was founded in 1967 and played at Pebble Beach Golf Links until 1987 when the Championship was invited to Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, where it was played through 2019.

36-hole stroke play qualifying round, 18 holes each day, to determine 32 players for match play. Prizes will be awarded to the Champion, Runner-up, Semifinalists, Quarterfinalists and the 36-hole Low Gross Medalist from qualifying rounds.
