David Partridge, 56, of Manakin shot a stroke play qualifying best 5-under 65 at The Homestead’s Cascades Course to earn medalist honors at the 64th Virginia State Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship.
HOT SPRINGS, VA.(Aug. 23, 2011) –– Central Virginian David Partridge, 56, of Manakin shot a stroke play qualifying best 5-under 65 at The Homestead’s Cascades Course to earn medalist honors at the 64th Virginia State Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship.
Stroke-play qualifying was conducted Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 22-23 at The Homestead’s par-70 Cascades Course and the resort’s par-72 Old Course.
After carding even-par 72 on the first day at the Old Course, Partridge concluded stroke-play qualifying at 5-under 137 and was the low qualifier for match play, which begins on Wednesday.
Partridge took apart the Cascades first nine on Tuesday, logging six birdies, all inside 11 feet, to turn in a sizzling 6-under 29. He started the surge with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 2 and 3 and then reeled off four more from Nos. 5-8 to complete a seven-hole stretch of six under par golf on the demanding layout.
Despite three bogeys in a five-hole stretch on the inward nine, Partridge rebounded for birdies at the par-3 15th and par-5 17th holes.
“It’s inspiring to play up here,” Partridge said. “I got on a roll and managed to get a few putts to go in the hole. Every one of the putts was a slight breaker from right to left, a more comfortable putt for a right-handed golfer. I managed to hit a few good ones. It was a good day.”
A longtime participant in VSGA championships, the Hermitage Country Club member has plenty of championship pedigree on his side. He owns two victories at the VSGA Amateur Championship and has collected three wins at the VSGA Mid-Amateur. Partridge reached the round of eight at last year’s VSGA Senior Amateur at The Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course.
Northern Virginia John Price, 60, of Chantilly, register the second-best round of the day of 3-under 67 at the Cascades, concluded stroke-play qualifying at 4-under 138 and was the second low qualifier for match play. Former VSGA Amateur champion and reigning USGA Senior Amateur Championship finalist Pat Tallent, 58, of Vienna (1-under 71 at the Old Course); event rookie in 55-year-old Roanoke resident Van Renick (1-under 69 at the Cascades) and 59-year-old John Hoffman of Fairfax (2-under 68 at the Cascades) completed the top five low qualifiers for match play at 3-under 139.
Four former VSGA Senior Amateur champions to advance to match play in Williamsburg’a Mike McDonald (2009), Bob Morris of Great Falls (2007) as well as Richmond residents John Cuomo (2004) and Vinny Giles (2000 and 2003). Record four-time VSGA Senior Stroke Play champion J.P. Leigh of Suffolk also made match play as did reigning VSGA Senior Amateur finalist John Long of Centreville.
Altogether, 32 players who concluded stroke-play qualifying at 10-over 152 or better made it to the match play portion of the championship.
The first and second rounds of match play are set for Wednesday, Aug. 24, followed by the quarterfinals and semifinals on Thursday, Aug. 25. The scheduled 18-hole championship final is set for Friday Aug. 26. All matches will be conducted at the Cascades Course.
Second round play was unaffected by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that rocked Virginia and the East Coast this afternoon

36 holes of stroke play qualifying (18 holes per day); the low 32 players advance to match play. Open to VSGA members who are at least 50 years of age holding an active GHIN number issued by a licensed VSGA Member Club in good standing.
