Ouimet Memorial: Gilmartin takes 2nd-round lead
AUBURNDALE, Mass. (July 28, 2011) -- John Gilmartin of Indian Ridge, the 2004 Ouimet champ, had another very hot putting round for a 69 at the 6,322 yard par 70 Dedham Country & Polo Club and a three shot lead after two rounds of the 44th Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament. The final round of the 54 hole invitational is today at Woodland Golf Club.

Gilmartin, a 44 year old hockey rink and league operator, had just 27 putts after opening with 26 putts at Charles River Country Club in the opening round on Wednesday. “The putting was great. I made a lot of 10-15 footers,” he said. Gilmartin stands at four under par 137, which, he said, could have been better. A bunkered tee shot at the par three 17th hole led to a double bogey and he flew the 18th green with his second shot and closed with bogey.

Tied for second are Herbie Aikens of Pinehills and Dartmouth college student Peter Williamson at one under par 140. Aikens, who is ranked 2nd in Mass. Golf Association points, added a 71 to his opening round 69. The 29 year old electrical contractor hit 15 greens, but missed several 5-6 foots putts, eventually putting 36 times on the difficult greens. Williamson, who recently led the New England Amateur Championship for the first two rounds, made several fine recoveries after hitting only 12 greens for his 71. It was the first time Williamson, a college senior, had ever played Dedham.

Chelso Barrett of Keene, NH, a 16 year old who was runner-up in the US Junior championship last week, had a 68 and is fourth at 141.

Joe Keller of Oyster Harbors, the 1997 Ouimet champ, is looking to become only the second player to win the championship and senior divisions of the Ouimet tournament. The 63 year old added a 73 to a first round 72 for a 145 total and leads Mike Cole of Gannon by three shots.

Friday’s play will also include a women’s division featuring six invitees in an 18-hole competition.

A total of 43 players made the cut, which stood at 153.

ABOUT THE Francis Ouimet Memorial

This 54-hole stroke play tournament honors Francis Ouimet, considered America's First Golf Hero and one of the most important figures in the history of golf. His victory in the 1913 U.S. Open in a stunning playoff upset of Harry Vardon and Ted Ray is viewed as the turning point in American Golf. The event, first played in 1968, one year after Ouimet's death, is held at three top Boston-area courses, with the final round always taking place at the 6,721 yard Woodland Golf Club (Mr. Ouimet's home course). The most notable winner to date is Brad Faxon, who captured the 1980 event. There are three divisions: Men, Women, and Senior.
