Conn. Senior Match Play: And then there were four
BLOOMFIELD, Conn. (July 20, 2011) -- Two members of the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame still remain at the 5th Connecticut Senior Match Play Championship at Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, Conn.

Dave Szewczul, a 2010 Hall of Fame inductee and defending champion, from Tunxis Plantation Golf Course earned medalist honors on Tuesday with a one over par round of 73. He has yet to see the fifteenth hole through two rounds of match play winning both matches by a margin of five and four. Szewczul will resume his quest for a repeat at 8:00am Thursday morning against Jim Tierney from Richter Park Golf Club. Tierney has had a similar route to the semi-finals. Tierney’s margins of victory in his two matches were five and four and six and five respectively.

The other Connecticut Golf Hall of Famer still remaining is William Lee from The Course at Yale. Unlike Szewczul and Tierney, Lee’s margins of victory have been quite small. Lee, a three time Connecticut Amateur champion, found himself three down through eleven holes to Mike Natale from East Mountain Golf Club. Lee would make a dramatic comeback winning six straight holes from twelve to seventeen for a three and one victory. Lee jumped out to an early lead in his afternoon match and would defeat Bob Carroll from Wampanoag Country Club three and two. Lee will face Rick Lawrence from Ridgewood Country Club who knocked off the number two seed Jim Ransford from Glastonbury Hills Country Club in the Round of 16 and James Curtis from Clinton Country Club in the quarterfinals.

Semi-final matches will begin tomorrow Thursday, July 21st at 8:00am with the eighteen hole final to follow shortly after the conclusion of the two semi-final matches.
