TEMECULA, Calif. (July 18, 2011) -- The opening round of the 16th annual California Women's Championship finished today at the Temecula Creek Inn Golf Reort in Temecula, CA. The leader among the field of 69 players is Stephanie Arcala of Oceanside who fired a four-under par 68 on the 6092 yard layout.

Arcala, who just finished up her eligibility on the women's golf team at San Diego State, had five birdies and one bogey on her round. Her birdies came at holes 2, 5, 9, 14 and 17.

At one back with 69 is Marissa Mar who plays out of El Macero Country Club. The long hitting Stanford sophomore had little trouble hitting most of the par fives in two. She had birdies at holes 1, 3, 8, 9, 10 and 17. Mar attributed her fine play to "better driving which gave her more opportunities."

Neomi Hunt of Chino Hills, Ellen Kraus of Bakersfield and Devon Brown of Rancho Santa Fe all shot an opening round 70. Stephanie Yocum who plays out of Cypress Ridge sits alone at 71.

Shooting even par, 72, is the foursome of Courtney Soekland of Santa Rosa, Teri Gangi of Monte Sereno, 2008 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champ Joan Higgins of Glendora and amateurgolf.com's Lynne Cowan.

The 2007 and 2009 past champion Sharon Park shot a 77. Sandy Woodruff, the 2006 champion opened with an 81. Emily Childs the defending champion is not in the field.

The best shot of the day was by Kathy Quack of Playa del Rey who had an ace on the 109 yard 12th hole. Quack who plays out of Screaming Eagle Golf Club accomplished the feat with a nine iron.

Play continues tomorrow at 8 a.m.
