Maine Open: Carbone wins 3-way playoff

Michael Carbone made a par on the first hole of a sudden death playoff at Falmouth Country Club

FALMOUTH, Maine (June 22, 2011) -- Michael Carbone made a par on the first hole of a sudden death playoff at Falmouth Country Club Wednesday to win the Charlie's Maine Open Championship with a total score of 138. Shawn Warren of Windham, John Hickson of Topsham and Carbone from Brewster, Mass., all earned their playoff spots with equal scores of 138. Warren, who won the tournament in 2004 as an amateur had a chance to earn the victory outright as he took a two-shot lead into the 18th hole. However, he saw his hopes dashed as he hit his tee ball into the long grass, then hit a wayward shot toward the clubhouse on his next shot. He was able to recover and hit his approach shot to about 12 feet, then lipped out the putt. Unfortunately, he also lipped out his three-footer coming back to force the playoff. Carbone had birdies on 15, 16 and 17 to shout 69 for today, tying Warren's two day total of 138. Warren and Beon Yeong Lee had the low rounds of the tournament yesterday with 66s. Warren ended with even par 72 today. Hickson, the 2008 Charlie's Maine Open Champion, combined his score of 70 yesterday with today's 68 to move to the playoff. Carbone made a routine par while Warren put his second shot into the left front bunker, then made a nice approach shot, but missed a six-footer for par. Hickson hit his approach shot to about 12 feet, left it short, then lipped out the par putt. Congratualtions to Carbone for a very classy victory. Congratulations also to Hickson and Warren, who tied for low Maine Pro. Also taking home crystal was low amateur Jason Gall of Augusta, who was one over par 145. Mark Plummer won the senior amateur while Don Robertson won the senior open.
