Greg Berthelot fired a seven-under par 65 on Friday to take a four-shot lead into the third round
Lafayette, LA (June 10, 2011) -- Greg Berthelot fired a seven-under par 65 on Friday to take a four-shot lead into third round play at the 92nd Louisiana Golf Association Amateur Championship, conducted this week at Lafayette’s Oakbourne Country Club.
His round started innocently enough, sandwiching a bogey on #4 around birdies on #2 and #6. An eagle three on the par five 7th got his round kick-started, then he proceeded to birdie #8, #10, #13, and #14, getting him to seven-under with two to play. He dropped a shot on the short par three 17th, but got it back with a finishing birdie on the difficult 450-yard par four 18th. His 65, coupled with a three-under 69 on Thursday, has him four shots clear of the field through 36 holes at 10-under par 134.
Brent Struthers of Baton Rouge fired a six-under par 30 on the incoming nine Friday to shoot 67 and catapult himself into second place. Struthers, who shot 71 in his first round Thursday afternoon, made the turn in one-over par 37 but when the excitement of his back nine ended his card showed two strings of three consecutive birdies. His only pars on the back came on #13, #14, and #18, with birdies on every other hole. Struthers has been in the hunt for this Championship a number of times in recent years, tying for 12th in 2010 and 9th in 2008 and finishing alone in 14th in 2006.
Alone in third is 2010 LGA Mid-Am Champion Patrick Christovich of New Orleans. Christovich fired a two-under par 70 on Friday to go with his 69 Thursday and will be paired with Berthelot and Struthers on Saturday in the final group of the day. He played consistent golf on Friday with three birdies (#14, #2, and #9) and one bogey (#12).
Tied for fourth are first-round leader Andrew Noto of Luling, Robby Going of Lake Charles, and Tim Dahlberg of Mandeville. Noto struggled around the turn on Friday, bogeying the difficult 18th, then making a double bogey six on #1 as he turned to the front side to go to four-over for the day. He righted the ship however, making three birdies on his inward nine to salvage a two-over par 74.Going was three-under through 17 holes on Friday but made a double bogey five on the par three ninth to card a one-under par 71. Coupled with his two-under 70 on Thursday, he stands at three-under 141.
Dahlberg coupled two birdies with two bogeys to shoot 72 on Friday and also stands at three-under 141 through 36 holes.
Other under par scores on Friday were posted by Kelsey Angelle of Arnaudville (70), Chuck Laudermill of Baton Rouge (71), Garrett Theriot of St. Martinville (71) 2002 Amateur Champion Grady Brame of Hammond (71), Brad Landry of Scott, and Chad Bailey of Lafayette (71).
The Dick Wilson-designed Oakbourne CC track played to a par of 72 at just under 6,900 yards on Friday. The course is in wonderful condition and continues to draw accolades from this field of the best amateurs in Louisiana. Friday’s play was conducted under hot and humid conditions but there was no sign of the thunderstorms that forced tournament officials to suspend play for just over two hours on Thursday. Forecast for the remainder of the week is for continued hot and humid conditions with just a slight risk of showers.
The field was cut after Friday’s play to the low 60 and ties with exactly 60 players surviving the cut at nine-over par 153. Third round play will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday off #1 tee with leaders Berthelot, Struthers, and Christovich going off at 10:21 AM.
