SEASIDE, Calif. (May 29, 2011) -- Jered Stone of Tarzana backed up his even par 72 at Black Horse on Saturday with a final round 73 at the even more challenging Bayonet layout to run away with a victory at the Monterey Bay Championship.
Stone, a redshirt at Cal State Monterey Bay carded five birdies and six bogeys in his two rounds. During his practice round he scored a hole-in-one on number 6 on the Bayonet course. Today he managed a birdie.
In discussing his round with tournament director Dominic Debellis, Stone commented that, "he knew that par would be a good score today." The caddie at the Preserve in Monterey was very close with his assessment.
The difficult hole locations combined with the strong winds gave the players quite a challenge at the recently renovated Fort Ord courses. In 2010 Bayonet-Blackhorse make Golfweek's "Best You can Play" state by state rankings, with Bayonet at No. 11 and Blackhorse at No. 14. In 2012 the courses will host the PGA Professional National Championship.
Dash Lindsell of Burlingame finished second with 147 shooting 76-71. Randy Haag, who is currently in first place in the tournament series player of the year standings, took third with a 148.
Mark Miller overtook first round co-leader Richard Petit (the pair led the Seniors by five strokes after posting a pair of 70s on Saturday) with a final round 74 to Petit's 78. Miller also won the senior division in the Wine Country event and is now number one in the senior points race.
In the Net Division, Joseph Cho crept past the three co-leaders with steady Sunday play to claim victory at 144 net, the same score as the other two divisions. Could be an amateurgolf.com first!
Next in the amateurgolf.com tournament series is the Bay Regional Championship at Tilden Park on August 6-7.
