Tami Green of Hamilton successfully defended her title at the 39th Women’s State Senior Championship at Prattville Country Club

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (April 21, 2011) -- Tami Green of Hamilton successfully defended her title at the 39th Women’s State Senior Championship at Prattville Country Club, but itwas a very close finish. Starting the day, Green led former champions Martha Lang of Birmingham and Chris Spivey of Pell City by four and five strokes respectively.S he shot a final round 80, added to her previous scores of 75-77, to finish on 232, with Spivey (81-76-76–233) coming up one shot short. Nancy Schlich of Auburn finished third (79-80-79–238), with Lang (75-81-83–239) fourth. Green, who beat Lang in a playoff last year, didn’t have her best day on the greens, but did just enough to hold off four-time championSpivey, who had the day’s low round by three shots. “I’m thrilled to win, but I’m a little disappointed in my score,” Green said. “It means a lot to win, it really does.” Green is two-for-two in this championship that is open to ladies who are 50 years old and above.There have been eight multiple champions over the years. This list is led by Mary Isbell, who won the championship an astounding eight timesbetween 1995 and 2003, winning every year in this stretch except for 2000. The lady who broke that streak and won in 2000 was Spivey. Gloria Ellers has also won it four times. June Mayson won it three times, with Sally Shertzer, Carolyn Smith, Ruth Garrison, Lang and Green each having won twice. “We came off the final green and I thought we were headed to a playoff,” Green continued. “Chris had a strong back nine (one-over-par)and when I missed a short putt on the last green I thought we were tied.” Not the case as her five-shot lead had dwindled to one, but it was still enough for her to be crowned the champion again.
