Former champions Tami Green, Martha Lang lead the way at Alabama Women's Senior Championship at Prattville Country Club

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (April 19, 2011) -- The 39th Women’s State Senior Championship began play today at Prattville Country Club and two familiar names lead the way.

Defending champion Tami Green and two-time former champion Martha Lang both carded four-over-par rounds of 75. They lead Nancy Schlich of Auburn by four shots, who was the only other player to break 80.

Green, who beat Lang in a playoff last year, had 14 pars and bogeys on Nos. 5, 10, 14 and 18. Lang’s card was a bit more up-and-down with bogeys on Nos. 1, 2, 5, 6, 10, 12 and 15 against birdies on 8, 13 and 15.

This championship is open to ladies who are 50 years old and above and is 54 holes of stroke play, concluding on Thursday.

There have been eight multiple champions over the years. This list is led by Mary Isbell, who won the championship an astounding eight times between 1995 and 2003, winning every year in this stretch except for 2000.

The lady who broke that streak and won in 2000 was Chris Spivey, who has won it four times, as has Gloria Ellers.

June Mayson won it three times, with Sally Shertzer, Carolyn Smith, Ruth Garrison and Lang each having won twice.

Lang, who grew up in Decatur, moved out of state for many, many years, and now lives in Birmingham, won it in 2007; finished second to Harriet Cauthen in ‘08; won in a playoff in ‘09; and lost in a playoff last year.

A career amateur, she is chairman of the United States Golf Association women’s committee and travels the country helping and officiating at USGA championships.

“It was my first tournament since the fall and I haven’t had the time to work on my game much. I just decided to come down here and have fun. Starting out was a little slow, but this is a tricky course…you need to have your wits about you on it.”

Green hails from Hamilton and beat Lang last year in a two-hole, cumulative playoff after they had identical rounds of 73-75-77–225 at Cypress Lakes Golf Club in Muscle Shoals. She won the playoff after parring the two holes and is now in the hunt for back-to-back titles.
