Virginia leads W. Virginia at team matches
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (April 16, 2011) -- After a strenuous day on the links, Virginia leads at the conclusion of the first day of the 28th West Virginia-Virginia Team Matches, at The Greenbrier Sporting Club’s Snead Course in White Sulphur Springs. With three lightning and rain delays, Virginia ended the day on a high note, leading 14-7 over West Virginia. Today’s matches originally included foursomes and four-ball play, but due to the severe weather and delays, four-ball matches have been postponed until the final day.
This year’s West Virginia team is comprised of the best 14 golfers in the state, including 4-time WV Open , 5-time WV Amateur Champion and 2009 WV Senior Amateur Champion, Harold Payne, who is representing the Seniors team. Also playing for the Seniors is 2-time WV Amateur and 2-time WV Senior Amateur Champion, Steve Fox, of Huntington; 2008 WV Senior Amateur Champion, Scott Bibbee, of Vienna; and Chuck Ingram, of Shepherdstown.,br>
The Regulars team includes 2007 WV Amateur Champion, Anthony Reale, of Charleston; and 2010 WV Mid-Amateur Runner-up, Sam O’Dell, of Hurricane. Also playing for the Regulars is Mason’s Trent Roush, Huntington’s Steve Ross, Alum Creek’s Tad Tomblin, Davin’s Jim Grimmett, White Sulphur Springs’ Brandon Watkins and Hurricane’s Hop White.
Representing the Super Senior team for West Virginia is 3-time WV Senior Amateur Champion, Jack Forbes, of Morgantown; and 3-time WV Senior Amateur Champion, Charles Persinger, of Scott Depot.
Tonight, the West Virginia and Virginia teams look forward to their annual dinner, which will include 2009 WV Golf Hall of Fame inductee, William C. Campbell, as the special guest. Tomorrow’s matches will include four-ball and singles matches, which will be played simultaneously.
