Hole-in-one advances 12 year old to finals of California Women's Am

Angel Yin scores hole in one, defeats Casie Cathrea, the defending champion and will play the 36 hole final match against Lauren Dobashi

After beating Charisse Spada of Portand in the quarterfinals 2 up, twelve year old Angel Yin of Arcadia defeated Casie Cathrea, the defending champion, 4 and 3. Yin is now on her way to the finals of the 44th annual California Women's Amateur Championship played at the Golf Club at Quail Lodge. The middle schooler had birdies at 1, 3, 4, 9, 11 and 13. To top it off she threw in a hole-in-one at the 135 yard par 3 number 12 using a 9 iron. This was her first hole in one in competition, but she has had six others. Yin had an amazing performance for her first time playing in the historic event. It wasn't too long ago that Mina Harigae won the championship at the age of 12 and then went on to win four times in a row. Harigae is now on the LPGA tour. It's too early to tell if Yin will follow in Harigae's footsteps but she's well on her way. To get her name on the trophy she will first have to get by Lauren Dobashi of Gold River, an experienced college player from U.C. Davis. Dobashi recently graduated and is now working as an assistant golf coach at her alma mater. Her quarterfinal match against Jennie JenQ ended with a 3 & 1 victory. Dobashi then beat Mitsue Lewis of San Diego in her semi-final match 4 & 3. The match was all square through nine holes, but Dobashi got a second wind on the back nine winning at number ten then finally made a move birdieing 12 and 13. She made a twelve footer on 15 to close out the match. After hearing of Yin's tremendous round, Dobashi's strategy for the final match is to play her own game and try to get the putter hot. In the Helen Lengfeld flight, Tracy Freeman of Woodland is set to play Emelie Smith of Nipoma in the final match. The 36 hole championship match will begin at 8:15 a.m. followed by the Helen Lengfeld final match at 8:30 a.m.
