CONCORD, Calif. (Sept 12, 2010) - It’s not every day when you phone a pro shop to get the results of an event and one of the winners answers the phone. It happened today. Craig Kilcoyne, 45, pro shop assistant at Diablo Creek Golf Course in Concord, Calif. answered the phone and said everyone from the tournament had gone home. He said he would do his best to find a copy of the results and fax them when he had a chance as he was the only one running the pro shop. Unfortunately he didn’t have time to give any details of the eleven under par, three stroke victory he and his partner, Scott Olds, had in the Concord City Four-Ball. Sometimes work comes before recognition.

We found out later that in the early 90’s Kilcoyne and Olds were roommates at CSU Stanislaus and played on the golf team together. Kilcoyne, who has worked part-time at Diablo Creek for about six years, is also a P.E. teacher at Concord High and the golf coach for both the boy's and girl's golf teams. His summer golf tournaments included a semifinal finish at the Sacramento Valley Match Play, a 3rd place finish in the NCGA Masters, a 3rd place at the State Fair Masters and 2nd place at the Vacaville City. It must be satisfying to finish his summer with a win. His partner, Scott Olds of Antioch, recently made the round of 16 in the NCGA Match Play Championship.

Also of note, Dom DeBellis, amateurgolf.com tournament director, finished tied for 2nd with his partner John Ramirez. The duo shot an eight under par 136.

Thank you to Sandy Sanderson, Diablo Creek Operations Manager, for assistance on background information for this article.
