Tom Studer of Jolliet, IL captures Dave King Senior Invitational title in a playoff over Pat Tallent of Virginia -- Gary Shimmin tops the Super-Senior division
HAYMARKET, Virginia (July 28, 2010) -- The Dave King Invitational has been conducted at the Evergreen Country Club for the last eleven years of it's twelve year existence with most of the national field of top senior and super-senior amateurs, as well as the top local amateurs having played the well conditioned course mutilple times.
Tom Studer from Joliet, IL, however, overcame the home course advantage of his fellow competitors and won this year's title on his first attempt, defeating Vienna, Virginia's Pat Tallent on the first extra hole.
Studer finished with a three-under 69 and three day total one-under 215. Tallent had a final round 1-under 71 after shooting even-par 72s in each of the first two rounds. Tallent got a "good break/bad break" on the first extra hole when his tee shot hopped out of a fairway bunker but left him with an awkward stance. He chipped to within 6 feet, however was unable to convert for his par. Studer executed a difficult up-and-down for par to take the title. Tied for third three back at 218 were John Price (Chantilly, VA) and Ron Carter (Monticello, IN). Tied for fifth were second round leader Dwight Holman (Chantilly, VA), John Long (Centreville, VA) and Pete Allen (Southport, NC). Ted Smith (Wilkinson, IN and Jerry Hudgins (Kingwood, TX) finished tied for eighth.
In the super-senior Division, Gary Shimmin from Okatie, SC shot a final round two-under 70 to catch second round leader Charles McClaskey (Ealton, MD) at four-under 212. Shimmin then escaped defeat on the first playoff hole, getting it up and down from 140 yards after driving into a fairway bunker, survived the second hole after hitting his tee shot into the creek before winning it on the third hole when McClasky failed to get down in two putts from 45 feet. Jack Vardaman (Washington DC), the first round leader finished in third at two-under 214. Dave Stewart (McClean, VA) and Charlie Jurgonis (Fairfax, VA) finished tied for fourth at 217.
