Virginia Senior Stroke Play: Mullian Holds Off Tallent
KESWICK, VA (June 17, 2010)--Richmond’s Glenn Mullian made a key 5-foot birdie putt at the par-4 17th hole to post a one-shot victory as the 25th VSGA Senior Stroke Play Championship concluded today at The Keswick Club (6,309 yards, par 36-35—71).

Mullian equaled a final-day and 2010 championship-best 68, matching the four under par score of runner-up Pat Tallent of Vienna, to finish the championship at 4-under-par 138.

Mullian, who reached the age eligibility requirement of 55 in mid-January, claimed his first VSGA victory as a senior and picked up the first VSGA individual title of his career; he won last year’s VSGA Four-Ball Championship with Ashland’s Tom Vlahakis.

“You learn how to win the more you get in the hunt,” Mullian said. “It’s nice to win because the best seniors in the state were at this event.”

After shooting one under in first round action, Mullian had four birdies against a single bogey in the final round. He shot one under on the outward half and added consecutive birdies after stuffing sand wedge shots to inside 5 feet at Nos. 12 and 13 to move to four under for the championship. At the par-4 14th, Mullian recovered from an errant drive, striking his sand wedge third shot to 12 feet before converting the par-saving effort.

Playing a grouping ahead of Mullian, Tallent was bogey-free and registered three birdies – all on the front nine. He birdied both par 5s on the outward half, Nos. 1 and 8 as well as sandwiching in another birdie at the par-4 fifth hole.

A late-bogey at the par-3 16th dropped Mullian to three under and into a tie for the top spot with Tallent, but one hole later, he drilled a 7-iron to close range and drained the right to left breaking putt. At the par-4 finishing hole, Mullian two-putted from 55 feet to cap the victory.

Over the past two months Mullian has won more than a half-dozen events around the state, including claiming four-ball and individual titles.

“The best thing about getting old is playing in these senior tournaments,” he laughed.

Mullian had a busy day. In the morning he qualified for the Richmond Golf Association Amateur Championship, shooting 71 at Hermitage Country Club, before heading off to The Keswick Club to make his 2:06 p.m. starting time at the Senior Stroke.

Danville’s Harry Lea (73) and Portsmouth’s Murray Rudisill (71) shared the overall super senior division title (ages 65-and-over) after closing play at 4-over-par 146.
