First round results from the 100th playing of a tournament that honors the first American to win the British Amateur
GARDEN CITY, New York (May 15, 2010) -- A windy day made Garden City Golf Club a real test on Saturday, and local knowledge came in handy at the 100th playing of the Walter J. Travis Invitational. It wasn't surprising then that a local player -- Jed Raynor of the host club -- is one of the four players to reach Sunday's semifinals.
Raynor scored a 1-up victory over Chuck Del Priore of Wykagyl in the quarterfinal this afternoon. He will play Jay Crowley of Round Hill in Greenwich, Connecticut Sunday. Crowley defeated T.J. Brudzinski of Worthington Hills (Ohio) 2 up in the afternoon, after defeating Eoin O’Connor in 20 holes.
In the other semifinal, Brad Shaw of the Los Angeles Country Club will play Ben Hayes of Whisper Rock Club in Scottsdale, Az. Shaw defeated Eaoghan O’Connell of the Fox Club in Florida, 1-up. Hayes beat Tom Yellin of Connecticut's Stanwich Club, 3 and 2.

Tournament honors Walter Travis, three time U.S. Amateur champ and the first American to win the British Amateur. Travis reworked the original Devereaux Emmet design. 18 hole qualifier establishes match play flights. Great event, great golf course.
