Todd Mitchell defeated Tim Sheppard in a 3-hole total stroke playoff after they deadlocked at 3-over

NAPERVILLE, Illinois (May 12, 2010) -- It's a great way to finish a tournament that finishes in a tie. We're talking about the aggregate playoff, where instead of playing until someone wins a hole (sudden-death, golf's version of extra innings) the players who tie in regulation go out and play a selected number of holes, with the lowest score winning. We won't worry about what happens if they remain tied after that, usually it's sudden-death. At the Chicago District Golf Association Mid-Am, a three hole aggregate is used at opposed to the four holes used by the British Open, which started it in 1989, when Marc Calcavecchia, Greg Norman, and Wayne Grady were tied at the end of regulation play (Calcavecchia won). While the CDGA Mid-Am is far from a professional major, just tell that to the players, who work for a living. Mitchell, of Bloomington, had his hands full with East Peoria's Sheppard, who had just fired a 4-under 68 to tie for the lead in regulation (Mitchell shot a final round 73). That round tied Cody Sundberg of Chicago for the lowest of the tournament, and was easily the lowest of the final round, when nerves and a tougher course setup usually kick in.
