RIO GRANDE, PUERTO RICO (February 23, 2010)--Texas won its first team title of the 2009-10 season Tuesday at the Puerto Rico Classic.

The Longhorns, No. 9 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot 12-under 276 at the River Course at Rio Mar in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, to finish at 42-under 822. No. 1 Oklahoma State, shot 274 and finished six shots back at 36-under 828.

Texas placed three players in the top 7, including freshman Cody Gribble, who shot rounds of 67-65-70 to finish second at 14-under 202. Sophomore Dylan Frittelli (67) tied for fourth at 11-under 205 and junior Bobby Hudson (71) tied for seventh at 208.

The victory was the Longhorns’ first since November 2008, when they won the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational. It was also the first time Texas had landed three players in the top 10 since March 2008.

Clemson (843) was third and Northwestern (853) was fourth.

Oklahoma State junior Kevin Tway won the individual title by three shots with rounds of 65-68-66 for a 17-under 199 total. Sophomore Peter Uihlein (67) tied for 11th and sophomore Morgan Hoffmann (74) tied for 15th.

Alabama sophomore Bud Cauley, who was playing in his first event since taking over the No. 1 spot in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, tied for 47th.

Texas opened the fall in September with a third-place showing at the Topy Cup in Japan, then followed with a third-place finish at the Olympia Fields Invitational. The Longhorns placed second in their next two events – the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and UTSA Lone Star Invitational – before wrapping up the fall with an eighth-place finish at the Baylor Invitational.

Texas opened the spring season by finished fourth at the Mauna Lani Invitational.

The Longhorns will play their next event March 12 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Invitational in Las Vegas.
