Alexis Thompson won the Jones/Doherty Championship - Golfweek photo by Tracy Wilcox
FT. LAUDERDALE, Florida (Jan. 23, 2010)
-- Put another check in Alexis
Thompson’s win column. The 14-year-
old defended her title at the Ione D.
Jones/Doherty Championship Saturday,
beating Taylor Collins, 3 and 1, at Coral Ridge
Country Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Thompson, the top-ranked player in the
amateurgolf.com Women's
Player Rankings, is at the end of a five-
week stretch of amateur tournaments, which
began with a win at the Junior Orange Bowl
Dec. 30. She finished second at the Dixie
Amateur, lost in a playoff to Kyle Roig at the
Harder Hall and came in third at last week’s
Sally.
Thompson took the No. 1 seed in the
match-play portion of the Jones/Doherty, and
never had a match go past the 14th hole until
her semifinal match against Martha Leach,
the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion.
Thompson beat Leach, 1 up, before defeating
Collins, a junior at Nova Southeastern, in the
final.
Roig took the No. 2 seed, but lost to
Kelsey MacDonald, 1 up, in the
semifinals.
Daniela Lendl, who has committed to
Alabama for the fall of 2011, lost to Collins, 2
and 1, in the Round of 16. Amelia Lewis, who
recently left Florida after her first semester,
fell to Collins in the quarterfinals, 2 and
1.
In the senior division, Kim Eaton, who
advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S.
Senior Women’s Amateur, defeated Lisa
Schlesinger, 1 up.
The Ione D. Jones/Doherty Championship
is the third tournament on the Florida Orange Blossom
Circuit, which kicked off with the Harder
Hall.
