MORGAN HILL, Calif. (Jan. 17, 2010) -- From the look of the golf bags at the amateurgolf.com Silicon Valley Amateur, a person who didn't know better might think we were running a college tournament. Indeed, the entire Cal Berkeley team was in the field, plus the bulk of the St. Mary's team along with members of the UC Davis, UCLA, Sacramento State, and Stanislaus State squads, among others.

One of those individuals, UCLA player Gregor Main of Danville, was defending the title "Co-Champion" which he shared with John Murphy (their sudden-death playoff was called due to darkness in 2009). Main took a one stroke lead into the final round after a nice 66 on the Valley Course at Coyote Creek on Saturday, then did his best to fight off cold and rainy

Sunday conditions on the Tournament Course, closing with a 74 and 36-hole total of 140. Cal player Michael Weaver -- who posted the round of the day with an even par 72 -- tied Main at 140, setting up a playoff for the second straight year.

Starting on the Jack Nicklaus-designed No. 18, (guess which way the dogleg goes) Weaver lost his tee ball left. That opened the door for Main, but when his second shot wound up left of the cart path (near the Coyote statue) he was faced with a long pitch shot that could easily find the water past the pin if it wasn't pulled off correctly. Indeed, he lofted it over the bunker and got up-and- down for par, putting his name on the trophy for the second straight year.

In the Senior Division, Peter Moren of Danville handled the weather like a veteran, playing par golf most of the day, giving himself a nice cushion heading into the final holes. He won by two strokes over first round leader Neil Duffy of Santa Cruz, despite closing out with a few bogeys. Patrick McKenna won a card-off over Kevin Smith of Martinez to win the Net Division title.

Special thanks go out to the entire staff of Coyote Creek golf course for hosting us this weekend, and for supporting us in our "play or not-play" decision on Sunday as golfers were on the course.
