MORGAN HILL, Calif. (Jan. 16, 2010) -- Last year, Gregor Main and John Murphy ended the Silicon Valley Amateur tied, and continued that way despite several holes of sudden death. When darkness set in, the players were declared co-champions.

It was probably the best finish in amateurgolf.com history - Murphy was three strokes back and holed an 8-iron from 160 yards to get into the playoff.

Murphy is not in the field this year (his brother Brian, a Cal Freshman is playing however) but Main, a UCLA standout from Danville, continued right where he left off in 2009 with a first round 66. Cal player Stephen Hale is one shot back in a field that is so strong (with four colleges having multiple players entered) that seven players shot under 70.

In the Senior Division, Neil Duffy of Santa Cruz continued his solid play -- he was runner up at the Christmas Classic in December -- his 68 gives him a three stroke lead over Fresno area Veterinarian Greg Saiki. Kevin Smith (Martinez) and Andrew Hickson (Vacaville) top the Net board at 71.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Play on Sunday is an 8:30am shotgun in order to give us the best chance to beat the storms that are moving into the area.
