National Inv. at Whisper Rock: Hayes, Wood prevail
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (April 24, 2014) -- Ben Hayes and Taylor Wood shot a final-round 4-under 68 to win the 2014 National Invitational at Whisper Rock.
The duo carded rounds of 69-70 over the course of the event's first two days but outlasted a surge from runners-up Mike Flood, Jr. and Ken Tanigawa to win by a pair of shots.
Defending champions Barry Dyche and Jason Pool, who had held the overnight lead and seemed poised for a second straight title, shot 72 on Thursday and finished alone in third place.
In the Senior Division, Dave Clement and Jay Pumphrey prevailed over Jeff Wilson and Todd Barsotti.
Clement and Pumphrey shot 70-66-72 to win by two shots, holding off a final-round surge from the runners-up to win the crown.
John Bracken and Paul Brown finished third.
The National Invitational at Whisper Rock is a two-man best-ball invitational event with Mid-Am and Senior Divisions. Played at both lower and upper courses at the very highly acclaimed Whisper Rock Golf Club, which boasts many Tour players among its membership, including both Phil Mickelson his caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay, the event draws a solid field made up of many of the game's top mid-amateurs and senior players as well as former professional athletes and celebrities.
