LAS CRUCES, N.M (April 6, 2014) – The first event of the 2014 SCAGA Championship season is now in the books, and without question, the dual course Championship gave hardware to worthy competitors. The breezy conditions over the weekend proved to be challenging, but competitors in eight flights were able to overcome the conditions, and find themselves on top. The southern portion of the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association dominated, as almost all of the Champions hailed from south of New Mexico’s population center of Albuquerque.
In the Men’s Championship Division, Devin Miertschin of El Paso, Texas took revenge on the last time he played at Red Hawk GC in a SCAGA event, and avenged his second place finish at the 2012 New Mexico – West Texas Amateur by taking home the overall championship over the weekend. The University of Texas El Paso graduate shot rounds of 70 and 71 for a 141 total, and a four shot victory over the field of 32. Miertschin, who carded ten birdies, and played the par five’s three under for the weekend has represented the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association on the Pacific Coast Amateur Morse Cup Team, and at USGA events throughout the years. His long term consistent play has been nothing short of impressive.
In the Sr. Championship division, Nick James Silva from Elephant Butte, NM also took home a four shot victory over the stacked senior field of 25, which included a variety of New Mexico – West Texas Champions; Cyrus Whitney, Mike Quinlan, Bruce Meyer, and more. Silva carded 150 over the course of two days, which included an impressive 72 at Red Hawk GC with five birdies.
Jennifer Delgadillo continued the ‘southern’ success in the SCAGA Spring Stroke play, as she hails from El Paso, Texas, and is your Women’s Overall Champion. Jennifer, no stranger to SCAGA hardware, shot 154 over two days for a four shot victory over Shania Berger of Socorro, N.M. On the net side, Jean Davis of Las Cruces, N.M. is your Women’s Low Net Champion, with a two-day total of 145.
In the Men’s Senior Net Division, the southern part of the Association goes five for five, with Ray Aguilar of El Paso, Texas taking home the trophy. Aguilar’s solid net play included 10 net birdies, and one net eagle for the 36-hole Championship. In the Senior Second Net, Donald Bustos was your low man, with a 144 net after two days of great golf.
The Men’s Net Division had enough competitors to be split into three flights, by handicap, and each one of the flight winners had stellar play over the weekend. In the Men’s First Net James Lack from Las Cruces, N.M. outlasted a tough battle against Kelly Johnson, and was victorious via scorecard playoff to win the trophy in the first of the net flights.
In the Men’s Second Net, Todd Caldwell is your champion with a blistering four under par 140. Todd, from El Paso, Texas, is the only competitor to post net score that low, which lead him to a four shot victory over his nearest competitor.
