LA QUINTA, California (April 5, 2014) -- First time contestants Michael Alsup and Ken Kee have to be pleased with their first round ever at the Giddings Cup. The pair from Tulsa, Oklahoma opened with a 6-under 66 -- the lowest round among the three flights -- to take a one shot lead over Gary Hardin and Bob Kain in the tournaments largest flight. Alsup is a two-time Oklahoma Mid-Am Champ who has also won the Oklahoma State Senior and competed in the U.S. Amateur.

Playing a beautifully-manicured Silver Rock Resort course, contestants enjoyed gorgeous views, and the occasional wildlife sighting which included hawks, roadrunners, and even big horn sheep seemingly defying gravity as they scale the steep mountains that frame the course.

In the super senior division, Bob Howe and Bob Fouke posted a solid 4-under 68 to lead Jeff Remmington and Bruce Richards by a shot.

AmateurGolf.com founder Pete Wlodkowski and web and marketing specialist Kyle Rector went around in a bogey-free 67 to lead the Mid-Ams by two strokes. The solid players behind them include the pair of teams tied at 69 -- Coachella Valley residents Joe Sanders and Tyler Crawford as well as U. of Washington Senior Athletic Director O.D. Vincent and his partner Brian Leitgeb. Vincent grew up in Palm Springs and won the California High School title as well as a Pac 10 individual medal while playing for Washington.

The shot of the day goes to Tyler Crawford - he aced the 150-yard 14th hole.

ABOUT THE GIDDINGS CUP

Named for 11-time USGA contestant and Northern California G.A. Champion Dick Giddings, the Giddings Cup originated in 1952 when Landmark Golf founder Ernie Vossler (dec. 2013) met Dick Giddings (dec. 2002) at a tournament in Arizona. The pair began a friendship that spanned four decades. In 1983, Vossler and 25-year Bob Hope Classic Director General Bill Yancey began the Giddings Cup -- the tournament is now in its 32nd year.
