AJGA CB&I Boys: Terrazas takes lead
THE WOODLANDS, Texas (Feb. 15, 2014) – Aaron Terrazas of Mexico, opened the first round of the CB&I Boys Championship at Carlton Woods with a 4-under-par 68 to lead the field by two strokes.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the CB&I Boys Championship at Carlton Woods is a 54-hole stroke play competition played on the par-72, 7,311-yard Fazio Championship Course at The Club at Carlton Woods. The 72-player field features players from 20 states, Colombia, China, Bolivia, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Zimbabwe. The field includes 12 of the top 25 boys in the Polo Golf Rankings and 32 Rolex Junior All-Americans.

In his first appearance at the longest-running boys-only Invitational, Terrazas built his lead early by stringing together birdies on Nos. 3-5 and 8. The 2015 grad pointed to ball striking and putting as keys to his hot start.

“It feels great,” said Terrazas, currently No. 37 in the Polo Golf Rankings and a verbal commit to the University of Oklahoma. “It’s one of my first times leading a tournament this big. I’ve been in this position a few times before, but I’ll come in with a different mindset for the next two days.”

Terrazas brings experience from five other AJGA Invitationals to the weekend including the closing three of the 2013 schedule (The Junior PLAYERS Championship presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf, The PING Invitational and the Polo Golf Junior Classic). His best 2013 finish was T4 at the Wells Fargo Junior Classic presented by Mizuno.

Tied for second at 2-under-par 70 are Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights, Ill., Yechun (Carl) Yuan of Lake Mary, Fla., and Wilson Furr of Jackson, Miss.

Ghim, playing in his third and final CB&I Boys Championship at Carlton Woods, birdied Nos. 4 and 7 and maintained consistency with a bogey-free round. The three-time Rolex Junior All-American finished T2 in 2012 and T24 in 2013 and is in the hunt for his first AJGA Invitational win before he begins his collegiate golf career at Texas in the fall.

“Last year I fell off because of one bad hole in the final round,” Ghim said. “I’m back again, trying to win this time. I’ll let the clubs do the talking and see where it takes me.”

Yuan made six birdies, including on the par-5 No. 17 where he hit the flagstick on his approach and capitalized with an eight-foot putt. The UCLA verbal commit hopes to take advantage in his first CB&I Boys Championship at Carlton Woods appearance.

Furr earned his second-place position with birdies on Nos. 1 and 2, the opening two holes of his back nine. The 2017 grad said he gained confidence after he nearly holed out on No. 18 with his 7-iron approach shot. In October, Furr finished second in a rain-shortened Junior All-Star Invitational sponsored by NIKEGOLF, his first AJGA Invitational.

Second-round tee times will run from 8:30 – 10:20 a.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees of the Fazio Championship Course at The Club at Carlton Woods.
