Monterey Open: Matt Montez leads early

MONTEREY, Calif. (Oct. 14, 2013) -- Matt Montez fired a red-hot 7-under 65 to take the first-round lead at the 2013 Monterey Open Championship at Del Monte Golf Course on Monday.

Montez leads Big Break Greenbrier competitors Isaac Sanchez, who shot 66 to open play.

Former Monterey Open champions John Ellis and Brandon Harkins are tied for third after firing 5-under 67s in Round 1.



ABOUT THE Monterey Open

Professionals and amateurs are entered into a 3-day, 54-hole, stroke play competition. The field will be cut to the top 40 players and ties for the final 18 holes. All professional and amateur players are able to enter the open/scratch flight. Amateurs must have a valid USGA Handicap index of 2.4 or below.
