Greater Houston Amateur: Beck leads by 1
HOUSTON, Tex. (Oct. 4, 2013) —Tyler Beck of Kingwood fired a 3-under-par 68 to take a one-shot lead over 2010 champion James Bartell and 17-year-old Benjamin Arnett after the first round of the Greater Houston City Men's Amateur Championship.

Beck made four birdies to offset one bogey on his next-to-last hole. Bartell made five birdies but suffered three bogeys. Arnett, the three-time runner-up in the Junior City Championship, scored three birdies and one bogey.

Three others in a starting field of 144 broke-par 71 at Memorial Park Golf Course. Louis Lopez, Jamey Taylor of Friendswood and Randy Lance of The Woodlands all carded 70s. Defending champion Bart Worthing of Weston Lakes shot 74.

Tee times for Saturday's second round start at 7:30 AM. The field will be cut to the low 40 scorers for a 36-hole finale on Sunday.

More than 600 players registered for the Houston Golf Association-run championship. There were five sold-out qualifiers conducted across the area to determine the starting field of 144.

72-hole stroke play championship, run by the Houston Golf Association that many people consider Houston's "Major" (with the feel of a PGA Tour event, including a cut to the low 40 and ties). Players must have permanent residency in the Greater Houston area which includes the following counties: Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller. Non-exempt players must pre-qualify.
