Virginia Super Senior: Engel leads
LANSDOWNE, Virg. (July 9, 2013) –– Alexandria’s Bill Engel, 66, shot 1-under-par 71 to lead the first round of stroke play qualifying in the 65-69 age division at the 19th Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Amateur Championship being conducted at The Golf Club at Lansdowne’s Robert Trent Jones Course.

Also in the 65-69 age category, 66-year-olds Terry Towler (Dillwyn) and Dale Moore (Salem) opened with 1-over 73. Three event rookies in 65-year-old northern Virginians John Whitmore (Alexandria), Jon Abbett (McLean) and Keith Compton (Reston) logged 2-over 74.

Engel played solidly and accounted for three birdies, including one at the par-4 finishing hole, to post red numbers.

In the 70-74 age bracket (5,928 yards), Peter Jacobi, 70, of Arlington carded 3-under 69 to lead the way. Richmond’s Stan Fischer, 71, bettered his age by one stroke, returning 2-under 70, while local Robert Murphy II, 70, of Reston completed the three subpar rounds in the division, firing 1-under 71.

Jacobi won last year’s 65-69 division before turning 70 in late February. He’s apparently finding the bump up in age category to his liking, accounting for a five-birdie, two-bogey round.

Among the competitors in the 75 and over category, Harry Cain, 75, of Williamsburg led the way, shooting 4-over 76. Northern Virginians James Burton, 76, of Aldie and William Stallings, 77, of McLean each had 77. Cain won two straight titles in the 70-74 age category before turning 75 last September.

Following Wednesday’s second round of stroke play qualifying, eight players will qualify for the match play field in both the 65-69 and 70-74 age divisions, while four players will make match play in the 75 and over division.

Match play qualifiers in the 65-69 and 70-74 age groups will play two rounds of matches on Thursday, July 11 and final round matches on Friday, July 12. Golfers making match play in the 75 and over division will play one match on Wednesday and the final on Thursday. Players will only compete with those in their age group.
